Looking for an anime that combines supernatural horror, mystery, and consistently gorgeous (and sometimes trippy) animation? Then check out Mononoke – a hidden gem from mid-2007 that is available on Crunchyroll. This anime is a spin-off of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, but you can jump right into the story without having seen the parent series.
Mononoke is about a strange character known only as the Medicine Seller. He slays mononoke – malicious spirits that manifest from people’s twisted desires and evil actions. Each story arc has a unique evil spirit and a mystery-style plot. The Medicine Seller must find out the spirit’s shape, reason and truth before he can slay it.
My words can’t adequately convey just how breathtaking beautiful and unique this anime’s art style is. You should check out Astra W.’s article on Yattatachi about how Mononoke combines elements from ukiyo-e prints and kabuki theater.
A Note about Triggers: Mononoke deals with dark subjects. I have chosen not to list potential triggers because doing so would spoil the story. However, you may want to do some research before watching.
